Survey Says that Three-Quarters of Canadians Don’t Save Up for Holiday Shopping

Based on survey results, it seems that three-quarters of Canadians face at least some post-holiday debt when the bills start arriving in January.

Holiday shopping with credit card, not with money saved up firstAccording to a recent survey conducted by TransUnion, more than half of the Canadians they surveyed, 65%, said that they don’t save up before they do their holiday shopping. On top of that, 14% of people in the same survey said that they only save in October, November and December.

While it’s better to start saving late than not at all, saving in the midst of shopping can be too little too late. Rather than relying on your flexible friend, aka credit card, to “afford” your holiday shopping, take a lesson from the “Ghost of Christmas Past” and create a plan that keeps your holiday expenses manageable.
